There has been a lot of talk that Obama may retain Bush appointee, Robert M. Gates, as the secretary of defense in an Obama administration. Gates is a moderate, who has been seen as a vast improvement over his predeccessor, Donald Rumsfeld, and some foreign policy experts believe that Gates would provide continuity as Obama ends the war in Iraq, and moves back in to Afghanistan.
My opinion should not count for much, as I am unfamiliar with Mr. Gates, however I will give it anyway. To retain Gates would be a mistake, because I think that we need a completely fresh start in the areas of foreign policy and defense.
I hope that Obama makes the decision to provide that fresh start by appointing a new secretary of defense.
