Women's Fashion Trends 2008: Custom Design Online - Part One

dress from studio 28 couture Do you ever have a problem finding just the dress you want? I sometimes do, but up until now, my only options were to make it myself (which I have done many times, including the drafting of my own pattern....argh....), or have a seamstress make it for me. Now we have another option - - custom design available online.

In a previous post about custom fit jeans, I told you about Adwa jeans, available both online and in their shop. In another post, I profiled Treehouse 28, an Etsy shop which specializes in custom women's casual clothing.  In the past year or so, a number of other custom design options have cropped up on the net, and in this post I'll tell you about one of them, Studio 28 Couture.

She's Got the Look - Summer to Fall Fashion

A great, casual and classic summer look moves in to Fall. In other words, a way to dress when the weather is not quite cold, not quite hot, it's a little in between......smile

dress
Start with a great black dress; the dress pictured may be worn for casual occasions, and work, a double duty sort of thing.
Add sandals for a casual look, pumps or flats for work, and you are ready to go all summer.

text decoration Go in to Fall fashionably

Well look, it's September now, and it's still hot outside, but you want to look like a truly fashionable woman, and finding something to wear can be so trying at this time of year.

The solution? Re-invent (Madonna it.:)) a summer dress by adding a fab blazer or cardigan, some great pumps, stockings or tights, and a silk scarf for color.
Don't forget to use common sense......choose a dress that is not really "summery" looking, like the black dress depicted.

Glam Hint: Remove the belt when wearing the blazer, and wrap and tuck the scarf in to the neckline. Pssst.....don't forget the stockings!

One more thing. Please ladies, don't take things too literally. I sometimes find more expensive items, okay, very expensive items, because it is easier. You can always duplicate the look to a surprising degree, for far less money. It just requires a little shopping around, and some ingenuity!

Fashion Victims: The Modern Glam Guide to Fashion Do's and Don'ts

In last week's post about fashion victims, Why Are Celebrities So Often Fashion Victims?, I talked about  the possible reasons that people become fashion victims. Now, we're ready to talk about how to avoid being a fashion victim ourselves.

image Don't go overboard on the trends of the moment.
You love the zebra print, but you don't need to buy it in multiples. One piece can make you appear in sync with current trends, and will prevent you from looking like a fashion victim.

She's Got the Look: The Day Frock

To wear anywhere daytime, or for  a casual evening. Yummy fresh colors, an elegant, timeless, classic.

elegant summer dress
The accessories were chosen with an intent to keep them clean and simple; the dress itself has enough going on, and it would be so easy to turn this look from elegant to a clashy, busy unbecoming costume.

So where's the necklace? For most women, this type of neckline looks far better without a necklace, because the combination of the neckline and a necklace will make even a longish neck look short and stocky. Don't you dare!

Keep it simple---simple, elegant, matte gold earrings were chosen to warm up the cool colors, without overwhelming the dress.

For further info, please see the resource page.

ps.....If you don't care for the "matchy-matchy" shoes and bag, switch the bag to a simple, structured, small straw bag. Have fun.

pss....the price of the dress is so right!

Modern Glam Weekly Shopping Find: June 7

I haven't shopped around a lot this week, other than for lingerie, as is probably obvious to all who are reading.

This morning, I logged on at NeimanMarcus.com, and looked through their pre-Fall offerings. All I can say is .....yummy!

The dress and jacket I chose are more like an "inspirational find", since the price is far more than I have to spend, but if I could........

dress and jacket
The sexy, chic dress is ruched, with an asymmetric neckline, of nylon and spandex, by Roberto Cavalli, $1056 at neimanmarcus.com.

Paired with a fabulous little featherweight leather jacket, pleated detail at the cuffs, button front, also by Cavalli, $2965 at neimanmarcus.com.

A girl can dream......

Fashion Trends: Lingerie Fall 2008

Fashion trends in lingerie don't change as quickly or to the degree that they do in the apparel collections, and this year is no exception.

For Fall 2008, there are three primary trends that distinguish the fall collections from previous collections. The first of these is color, and the three colors which designers focused (other than the ubiquitous white and nude) on are black, purple, and red. While vibrant color took the stage during the spring-summer collections, for fall, we see grayed down colors, as though they removed the warmth of summer.

Another thing that you will notice is the prevalence of more extravagant finishing's|trims than we normally see in lingerie collections. Some of the more expensive features are embroidery, a more lavish use of expensive lace, more silks, and beading.

Finally, the third trend is the glamming up of "shaper garments", which are foundation garments that have been designed to push it up, suck it in, etc..  Considering how utilitarian they normally appear, this is probably a good thing.

So, How Many Bras Does a Woman Really Need?

bra and panties  How many bras do you own? Because of the lingerie series, I did something I have never done........I inventoried my bra collection.

I always have the correct bra, because I'm just sort of anal like that, and when buying apparel, I also buy undergarments if I know that I do not currently own the appropriate foundations.

Truthfully, this is a good rule to follow, as it insures that you will never be throwing things in a panic on a night when you just have to wear a specific type of bra. In my view, the elimination of time wasters and stressors is always a good thing.

So anyway, my inventory¹ turned up the following bras:

3 pretty soft cups, for sleeping in (one of the benefits of not having an SO currently, is being free to wear a sleep bra)
10 underwire's for daily wear, all lacy and pretty (I can't stand utilitarian lingerieyuk  )
4 lacy, unpadded demi cups (1 nude, 1 beige, 1 black, and 1 white)
2 lacy bustier's (1 white, 1 black)3 plunge|push-up bras for deep necklines (white, black, nude)
4 seamless underwire's for clingy knits (2 black, 2 nude)
4 racerback's for sleeveless summer garments (2 nude, 2 black)
2 strapless push-up's (1 white, 1 black)
4 misc. bras for........whatever :)
5 underwire's
with prints and lace, for fun

Okay, I know what you're thinking......too many bras. But, I like not having to worry about whether or not I have the appropriate bra for something I decide to wear. And, I enjoy feeling feminine even in a pair of jeans. I also really like knowing that I don't have to worry that my bra straps are showing, or various other assorted hazards of not wearing the correct style of bra.

bra and boy shorts   bra and panties

Having been in the fashion industry for years, made me very conscious as to what our underpinnings actually contribute to a look. They really can, and do, help you to look fabulous or tacky. The choice is strictly up to you!

So what is a minimal "bra wardrobe", you might wonder....see below for my version of a very minimal bra wardrobe.

Lingerie Workshop: What's Your Bra Style?

bra The type of bra you wear will, to some degree, determine how pulled together you look, and whether you look seductive, elegant, neutral, etc.. Depending upon the occasion, be it work, or a date, or something else, as women, we almost all take these factors in to consideration, even if we don't consciously think about it.

Because the bra is such an important piece of apparel in our lives, the first article in the lingerie series, is about bras---both styles  and specific functions.
