I've been wondering......how do people come up with/invent their online names/identities? So many of the names I see online seemingly make absolutely no sense.
Even so, I do have to admit that I have seen many names that make perfect sense. Like my friend Rachel's online name, which is Odd Vantage, or Odd Rachel. Considering that she is a photographer, and considers herself "odd", that name makes perfect sense.
Another friend, Wisdom Hypnosis, well, if you read her blog, you know that her name also makes perfect sense. As does that of Ken Armstrong Writing Stuff.
But what about names like "cookio", and "cloudbox"? What the hell do those names mean or signify?
And how the bloody hell do you people think up those names??
In my imagination, I would think that cookio is somehow related to "cookie". But how? Are they a giant cookie?
Um, okay, that's just silly.
Maybe they're just inordinately fond of cookies? Well, hmm..., that makes sense. Sort of. But, if so, why not use a name like "cookie lover" or "cookie fiend", etc, instead of "cookio"??!! Sheesh. Weirdos.
But there are other names that I've come across that make even less sense. Such as "bumbleoz". Bumbleoz? What the hell does that mean, for heaven's sake??
They are a bumbler in the land of Oz? They bumbled Oz? Maybe bumble means boinked, erm.....you understand what I mean. So why not use "boinkoz"?
Ye Gods, I'm growing ever more confused by the minute.!
In the interest of retaining my own sanity, I've come up with a few rules to consider when you take on an online identity. Nothing to get excited about, but hey, it could work.
Inspire Emotion's Rules for Creation of Online Identities
1. Pick a name that makes freakin' sense, damn it! If you wanna use something like "bumbleoz", at least feel compelled to explain your reasoning everywhere you post online.
2. While you're creating the name, consider adding info about your gender, marital status, and sexual orientation. That way we know what we're dealing with.
For example, I could name myself "Inspire-SSF". SSF=single straight female, of course. Yeah. And if you're gay, and single, you could call yourself "whatever-SGM", etc.. Now, if you're married, your sexual orientation doesn't really matter, so leave that part out if you like.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on the topic, and if you choose not to follow my rules, I would at least like a little freakin' consideration from those of you who have a penchant for decidedly senseless names...........don't use them! Just resist. Just bloody don't do it. Losers.
