Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, a French painter of the nineteenth century, is perhaps lesser known to the general public than artists such as Claude Monet,
However, the French painters of that time, including Monet, called Corot the "Father of French landscape painting". Corot was the leading painter of the Barbizon school of France, and was exceptionally prolific, completing 3,000 paintings in his lifetime.
While most noted for his landscapes, his nude studies were also highly acclaimed, and both Picasso and Degas paid homage to Corot's nudes in their own work.
Claude Monet once said:
“ There is only one master here—Corot. We are nothing compared to him, nothing. ”
