Interesting. I thought the point of the stems was to prevent your hands from warming the wine.
Another sure-fire way to prevent broken stems is to swig straight from the bottle..

Actually, the stems are to keep the wine from being warmed by your hands. These glasses are intended to be used with red wine, which is supposed to be imbibed at room temp. I still prefer it cold most of the time. :)
